6 Tips to Prevent Ant Infestations

Did you know that the total weight of all the ants on earth outweigh the total weight of all humans? Ants are one of the strongest creatures in the world in relation to their size and can live for up to 30 years! With ant colonies making up intricate societies based around different roles and jobs, they can be extremely effective at finding food and assuring their own species survival. Unfortunately, this means that these creatures oftentimes find food in our homes. In order to prevent ant infestations here are 6 helpful tips.
The first step in preventing ant invasions is to block their entry into your home. Caulk or other fillers can be used to fill in cracks or holes in walls and foundation. Secondly, a solution of half vinegar and half water used throughout the kitchen will deter ants from entering your home to find food. Ants can’t stand the smell of vinegar and this strong odor helps destroy their scent trails used to navigate and find food. Vinegar is also a fantastic natural cleaning agent for your home. Next, it is important to create a barrier between ants and food sources. Jars and food containers should be closed tight, and pet food bowls can be placed in a second larger bowl filled with soapy water. This second bowl acts as a moat preventing ants from reaching the food. Our fourth tip is to draw a line of chalk or baby powder through areas that ants enter your home.  Talcum powder in these substances is a natural ant deterrent, and this line will create a barrier ants will not cross. In essence a line of these powders will create an ant force field. Our second to last tip is to sprinkle used coffee grounds in your garden and around your home. Ants dislike the smell of coffee and this practice will help them move on to another more ant friendly location. Finally, and most importantly, the best tip to prevent ants is to keep your home clean. A clean home with a dirty dish free kitchen will provide ants very little motivation to occupy your space. Make sure floors and countertops are wiped down and clean.
Ants can be very difficult to get rid of once they invade your home. The best practice to deal with ants is to prevent them from entering in the first place. However, sometimes an ant problem cannot be avoided and it is best to contact a professional to help deal with these elusive pests.
