Basic Information About Crawling Bugs

Here at Gem State Pest Solutions, we want to inform you about the different crawling insect pests that could invade your home. Read more about some common crawling pests below, and give us a call when you're ready to evict them from the premises.

Ants

At Gem State Pest Solutions, we aim to control many types of ants you may encounter in or around your home, including carpenter ants, red ants, odorous house ants (sugar ants), and pavement ants.

Billbugs

Billbugs and white grubs are severe pests of turf grass in parts of Idaho. Both groups of insects feed below ground and damage roots or the growing crown area of the plant. Infestations also may attract predators, such as skunks and raccoons, that dig and damage lawns in search of the insects.

Boxelders

When boxelder bugs build up to large populations and invade a home, they are usually pests only by their presence. However, their piercing-sucking mouthparts can sometimes puncture the skin, causing slight irritation.

Carpet Beetles

Varied carpet beetles will often burrow themselves in the material they feed. Control of carpet beetles can be complex and requires long-term service measures. Regular maintenance and sometimes-intensive treatments are needed. Please ask us about removing this annoying pest.

Centipedes

House centipedes are usually beneficial – they capture flies, cockroaches, and other tiny household pests. They never damage plants or household items. They are still creepy, however.

Crickets

Field crickets, or Gryllus assimilis, often with large back legs for jumping, are more noticeable in fall. They find mates by chirping, so finding them is just as easy.

Earwigs

Earwigs, or Forficula auricularia, meaning "skin wings," has 1,800 species in 12 families. They are tiny parasites that feed on mammals but don't have the usual pinchers. Earwigs don't usually use their ability to fly.

Fleas

Fleas (particularly cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, and dog fleas, Ctenocephalides canis) are in the order Siphonaptera. They have no wings and drink blood.

Millipedes

Every millipede has two pairs of legs attached to each apparent body segment. Most millipedes are brown or black, but some species are orange or red. Millipedes are found outdoors with moisture and decaying organic matter, such as under trash, grass clippings, mulch, rotting firewood, leaf litter, etc.

Roaches

Cockroaches often occur in great numbers around leaks in the basement or crawlspaces of the home or building. During periods of drought or when the weather changes from summer to fall, considerable migration may occur indoors. Control is needed before large numbers infest buildings.

Spiders

Under most conditions outdoors, spiders are considered beneficial because they feed on insects. However, they are undesirable to most homeowners indoors, and the unsightly webbing spiders used to catch insect prey usually outweigh this beneficial behavior. From black widows and recluse spiders to hobo spiders and all the rest, we'll exterminate them.

We were having a pest problem in our house, and after a few failed attempts at spraying ourselves, we were getting frustrated. It wasn't but a week later, we had a knock at our door and opened it to find a Gem State Pest Solutions employee asking if we needed any pest control. We explained our situation, and he explained their solution. We signed up right then. We had our treatment done that same week. Our experience has been nothing less than exceptional. These guys are knowledgeable, fast, and friendly and come highly recommended. We do and will continue to recommend them to anyone we can. It's been very nice to say hello to Gem State and goodbye to pests!
