4 Steps to Prevent Cockroach Infestations

Having cockroaches invade your home can be an absolute nightmare. Cockroaches can be a nuisance in places like Idaho Falls and Pocatello. These creatures spread tons of disease causing bacteria, allergens and many other negative health issues. Unfortunately, these creatures are extremely resilient, and masters of survival.  They can live for a week without their heads, survive fully submerged under water for 30 minutes, survive a month without food, run up to 3 miles per hour, and survive in temperatures close to freezing. These pests breed very quickly and are some of the most adaptable creatures on Earth. These survival skills have helped cockroaches survive for millions of years, and makes them extremely difficult to get rid of. In this entry we will discuss 4 steps to help keep these pests from taking over your home.

  1. Cut off food and water sources- The first step to prevent and get rid of roaches is to make your home inhospitable to them. Keep the kitchen clean, secure all food sources with a tight lid, and assure no standing water is left out for them. Keep trash cans sealed, make sure couches are free of crumbs, and secure pet water dishes.

  1. Seal off your home- The next step is to try to block them from finding ways into your home. Use caulk to seal up holes, repair holes in screen doors and windows, keep vegetation cut back from your home and assure there are no other easy access points for these creatures to get into your home.

  1. Remove moisture and warmth- Roaches love wet and warm environments. To make your home less comfortably for these filthy creatures, check your sinks and other fixtures for leaks and condensation, keep wet towels and toothbrushes hung up, and check common areas roaches tend to reside. Roaches oftentimes are found around leaking pipes, water lines, water damaged wood, inside drawers and cabinets, baseboards under the stove, on top and below the refrigerator and anywhere else that has moisture and warmth.

  1. Seek help- If you realize that you are dealing with cockroaches in your home, and the first three steps do not work, you should consult a professional. Roaches are extremely detrimental to your family’s health, and should be dealt with before the problem becomes too severe. With hard to get rid of creatures like these, diagnosing the problem and starting a solution early is key. It may seem hopeless to get rid of these pests, but we are here to help.
